ARTKELCH präsentiert:
Happy Birthday! 40 Jahre Papunya Tula Artists

Released from prison, the fierce-yet-vulnerable Danny is happily reunited with his lover Leanne (played by Jones' real-life partner Leanne Letch). *to walk through water searching with your feet

Kirsty Kross
Exhibition: "Lost and perhaps even possibly Found"
featuring the Performance : "Wir sind so glücklich, wirklich, wirklich glücklich. Wir sind so glücklich, ja, ja"
-a conversation in German with the accent of the Sydney Bourgeoisie to the melody of Kylie Minogue
Kirsty Kross about her installation and performance: “I analyze and compare a series of objects from my childhood focusing mostly on my bedspread from the age of 2 to 20 years old, with the bedspread I desperately wanted at the age of 12. The bedspread from my childhood was by the Finnish design brand, Marimekko. The bedspread I desperately wanted was by the Australian designer Ken Done, who my parents hated. I will also analyze other objects from my childhood. This sounds highly self indulgent, but I actually want to explore memories associated with growing up in Australia that reflect beliefs of cultural insecurity and inferiority in relationship to Europe, the complex relationship of many European Australians to the landscape and indigenous Australians and the anxiety many Australians feel in trying to construct a sense of authenticity. In doing so, “Lost and perhaps even possibly Found” explores the varied and changeable meaning of objects and how objects reflect, but also construct identity.”

The Berlin Sofa reading series at English Theatre Berlin presents:
The Making of Australia - Reflections on a work in progress
Australian Ambassador Peter Tesch + Australian author Campbell Jefferys read from a wide range of works
Myth-making has played an important role in the creation of a uniquely Australian identity - from the miners of the Eureka Stockade to 'Robin Hood’-styled bushrangers like Ned Kelly, to the bushmen idealised in the works of Lawson, Paterson and Dennis, to the Diggers of Gallipoli, to modern larrikins like Paul Hogan, Bob Hawke and the Crocodile Hunter.
But is this the whole story? Obviously not. Some of it may not even be true and, in any case, the Australian story has evolved in extraordinary ways in just the past 30 years.
The Australian Ambassador to Germany, Peter Tesch, and the Hamburg-resident Australian author and journalist, Campbell Jefferys, will draw on a wide range of literary and not-so-literary works to explore the questions, how are we seen and how would we like to be seen? (And, yes, there’ll be Australian beer!)

Filmfest Hamburg (27.9.-6.10.12) presents:
The Sapphires (AUS 2012, 101 mins., D: Wayne Blair; Cast: Chris O‘Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy and others)
Australia in 1968: four young, talented Aborigine women are discovered by talent scout Dave Lovelace. True to his motto "90% of all music is shit, the rest is soul", he forms the girl group into Australia's answer to the Supremes. The Sapphires' first gig is for US troops in Vietnam. A whole new world opens up for the girls: sex, war, politics and soul. A heart-warming, witty biopic based on the eponymous musical and the stories told by director Wayne Blair's mother, one of the original Sapphires!
30.09., 19h + 05.10., 16:45h
Lore (AUS/GER/UK 2012, 108 mins., D: Cate Shortland; based on the novel The Dark Room by Rachel Seiffert)
Southern Germany in the spring of 1945. When Lore's parents, high-ranking Nazis, are arrested, she and her younger siblings try to get to Hamburg where their grandmother lives. A dangerous journey through a ghostly landscape of destruction and hunger begins, a journey on which the children first realize the enormity of what their parents are responsible for. But the old ideology is hard to break. When Thomas, a Jewish concentration camp survivor, tries to help Lore, she sees him as an enemy - yet feels attracted to him. The encounter awakens hitherto unknown feelings and doubts.

Down Under Berlin - Australian Film Festival 2012 (13.09.-16.09.) presents the opening feature film:
Toomelah (AUS 2011, 101 mins.; D: Ivan Sen)
Set entirely in the remote Indigenous community of Toomelah, a mission created during the 1930s, to bring together Gamilaroi and Bigambal people, Ivan Sen’s film tells the story of Daniel, a small ten year old boy who dreams of being a gangster. After he’s kicked out of school, he befriends a local gang leader, but as things turn ugly, Daniel is forced to confront his uncertain future. A deeply intimate portrait of mission life in contemporary Australia, Toomelah reveals the challenges facing Australia’s indigenous communities, who, robbed of much of their traditional culture by Government policy, struggle to find an identity in modern day Australia. Toomelah was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2011.
